Bandeau Bikinis

The bandeau bikini is a popular swimsuit for women that basically features a strapless top. The bandeau bikini top (Wiki) covers a woman's chest and it is thought to be particularly elegant along with halterneck tops (Wiki). As there are no straps running over the shoulders, it is secured via a fastener.

This fastener can be placed in the front but is more commonly found at the back. There are some bandeau bikinis that do not feature a strap. These types of swimsuits for women are secured to the chest by elastic material, much like the boob tube.

As such, they are normally made from synthetic materials that have sufficient elasticity. The term bandeau is French, which is a means of describing a "strip". While the bandeau is primarily small, larger versions do exist. These are basically known as tube tops (Boob tubes). Interestingly enough, the bandeau has been around for a very long time.

Since the Roman era in fact. In the past, they were simply called a "shaped brassiere". Modern swimsuit versions started appearing sometime in the 1940's. As the years progressed, it began to change. It began to develop a structural foundation to give it a more alluring shape when worn. With the invention of the string bikini (Wiki), its use around the world declined sharply.

But it reemerged stronger than ever with modern fabrics and technology to back it up sometime in the 1980's. The material of choice during that period was spandex and other synthetic blends. As far as swimsuits for women are concerned, they are still popular today but probably not as popular as the common strapped bikini set.

But they still sell in decent numbers and have become rather unique due to its relative low use in certain countries. Bandeau bikinis will always have a place in the women's swimwear industry.
